Accomodation Wollongong.com - About Wollongong
Wollongong is a city, coastal New South Wales, Australia, in the Illawara district. The village of Wollongong (founded 1816) became a town in 1843, a municipality in 1859, and a city in 1942. It was amalgamated with other municipalities and shires in 1947 to form the City of Wollongong, which extends for 30 miles (48 km) along the coast and occupies 276 square miles (715 square km). Originally dependent upon grazing and lumbering, the area early became the focus of prosperous dairy farming.

Heavy industries have been increasingly attracted by the rich Bulli coal deposits; much of the coal is exported. Wollongong manufactures metallurgical products, including steel, refined copper, and brass as well as bricks, fertilizers, machinery, processed foods, chemicals, clothing, and coke. A fishing fleet operates from the artificial harbour of Port Kembla. Linked to Sydney (40 miles [64 km] north) by road and rail, it is the site of the University of Wollongong (until 1975, Wollongong College of the University of New South Wales) and a college of technical and further education. The Illawarra Region is a southern coastal district, New South Wales, Australia, extending 110 miles (180 km) from Bald Hill (north of Stanwell Park) south to the Shoalhaven River and Batemans Bay and from the shore west to the Illawarra Range of the Eastern Highlands, occupying an area of 2,200 square miles (5,800 square km). Its name derives from a corruption of the Aboriginal word alowrie, meaning “high pleasant place by the sea.” Sighted in 1770 by the British navigator Captain James Cook, it was first explored in 1796 by Matthew Flinders and George Bass. In the 1820s the district supported a cedar-wood industry and now embraces the industrial city of Wollongong, the coal deposits at Bulli, rich dairy lands in the south, beach resorts, and a prosperous offshore-fishing industry. Port Kembla, the chief port for the area, is a major centre of metal manufacturing, including iron and steel works. Lake Illawarra is a shallow lagoon located 50 miles (80 km) south of Sydney; the 8,500 acres (3,400 hectares) of Lake Illawarra provide good prawning grounds.- Source Encyclopaedia Britannica
